What are They Building in There? explores facades and the people that dwell within. It documents houses and their occupants from a small street (in Northcote, Melbourne, Australia) in which I lived for seven years. Thanks to all the neighbours who took part and acknowledgements to Tom Waits for the variation of his song title ‘What’s He Building In There?’.

During the 2005 Melbourne International Arts Festival, an edited version of the full series adorned the windows of the Red Shoe Delivery Service van. Red Shoe Delivery Service randomly approached pedestrians in Melbourne’s CBD and offered them a free taxi service in the van IF they were prepared to put on a pair of red shoes, click their heels together and request the destination of their choice.
