Mercy Hospital for Women – The Last Days – Melbourne, Australia
Images from the last days of the hospital in operation at its East Melbourne site, before it relocated to Heidelberg. It opened in 1971 and relocated in 2005. It’s a celebration of a life lived to the full and subsequent new beginnings.
In addition to these ‘last days’ images, there was also a separate major exhibition, Umbilicus, which comprised photography, installation, sound and text. It examined the ‘sense of place and belonging’ that arises during a long physical, emotional and spiritual relationship with a place, and the aftermath when one moves on. Umbilicus can be seen here.
